Left Brain Vs Right Brain
Here’s a quick overview of how the brain processes
information.
Basic Characteristics of Left and Right
brain:
In general, the left and right hemispheres of our
brain process information in different ways. While we have a natural tendency
towards one way of thinking, the two sides of our brain work together in our
everyday lives. The right brain of the brain focuses on the visual, and
processes information in an intuitive and simultaneous way, looking first at
the whole picture then the details. The focus of the left brain is verbal,
processing information in an analytical and sequential way, looking first at
the pieces then putting them together to get the whole.
Left brain thinking is verbal and analytical. Right
brain is non-verbal and intuitive, using pictures rather than words. The best
illustration of this is to listen to people give directions. The left brain
person will say something like “From here, go west three blocks and turn north
on Vine Street. Go three or four miles and then turn east onto Broad Street.”
The right brain person will sound something like this: “Turn right (pointing
right), by the church over there (pointing again). Then you will pass a
McDonalds and a Walmart. At the next light, turn right toward the Esso
station.”
Though right-brain or non-verbal thinking is often
regarded as more ‘creative’, there is no right or wrong here; it is merely two
different ways of thinking. One is not better than the other, just as being
right-handed is not ‘superior’ to being left-handed. What is important is to be
aware that there are different ways of thinking, and by knowing what your
natural preference is, you can pay attention to your less dominant side to
improve the same.
By learning abacus through the systematic training
approach at UCMAS, children can fully realize their potential by activating
both sides of their brain. By consciously using the right side of our brain, we
can be more creative. More so , because left brain strategies are the ones used
most often in the classroom, right brain students sometimes feel neglected.

will be able to retain knowledge better and become proficient in any subject,
especially math.

Workings of Our Brain
The human brain is made up of two halves. These
halves are commonly called the right brain and left brain , but should more
correctly be termed ‘hemispheres’. For some reason, our right and left
hemispheres control the ‘opposite’ side of our bodies, so the right hemisphere
controls our left side and processes what we see in our left eye while the left
hemisphere controls the right side and processes what our right eye sees.
The concept of right brain and left brain thinking
developed from the research in the late 1960s of an American psycho biologist
Roger W Sperry. He discovered that the human brain has two very different ways
of thinking. One (the right brain) is visual and processes information in an
intuitive and simultaneous way, looking first at the whole picture then the
details. The other (the left brain) is verbal and processes information in an
analytical and sequential way, looking first at the pieces then putting them
together to get the whole. Sperry was awarded a Nobel Prize in 1981.

Brain Development
Most brain development
in children occurs primarily before the age of 14, with much of that
development taking place in the first several years of life. Children retain
significant “neuroplasticity”, meaning brain adaptability that allows growth
and inter-connection of brain neurons.
The UCMAS Program is
designed to develop the integrated and motoring functions from both sides of
the brain. When children manipulate the beads of the Abacus, communication
between the hands and the brain stimulates the brain’s right and left
hemispheres. The right hemisphere – abstract side – creates an image memory of
the beads on the Abacus while the left hemisphere – logical side – applies the
requisite rules to perform the calculation.
Because the right
hemisphere of the brain is much faster than the left, when the students
exercise the right side through ‘visualization’, this results in strengthening
the right-brain capabilities such as:
- Photographic memory
- Perform complex calculations
- Conversion of images to words, numbers and symbols and the reverse
- Ability to process information on an intuitive level

Human Brain Skills
The human brain is a
complex structure and over the years become the seat for thousands of myths and
speculations. Researchers have been kept busy trying to differentiate between
myth and reality.
It has been proved
beyond reasonable doubt that the human brain and the nervous system is one of
the largest, best connected networks with information flowing at great speeds
between them. Information from one part of the body is carried through the
nervous system to the brain as also the brain's response to it – carried from
the brain through the nervous system to another part of the body.
The brain is also the
seat of human intelligence and emotions. And over the years educationalists and
systems have revolved around developing the best ways of training the brain, so
as to produce very clever and well balanced future generations. This however,
has proved to be too difficult as the personality of children vary greatly from
child to child and the curriculum fails when a specific system is used for all
types of children.
In the 19th century and
the early part of the 20th century it was widely believed that the human brain
was a mass of nerve cells that developed and specialized in specific fields as
the person grew up. The common belief among the neuro biologists’ was that the
brain developed specialty as the result of practice and nothing was natural by
endowment.
This theory was
disproved by Dr. Roger Walcott Sperry and his team of researchers and students.
Dr. Sperry proved that each nerve cell of the human brain specialized in a
specific function from birth and any attempt to alter this resulted in chaos
and confusion. Using his research he proved that if the nerve cells connecting
the legs of a rat were to severed, interchanged and then reconnected, the rat
would move its left leg every time it wanted to move its right and vice versa.
The rat’s brain could never unlearn this process and change itself to suit the
new arrangement.
Mental Calculation
Mental
Arithmetic is a form of
calculation that does not involve use of
any physical or external
gadgets / instruments such as a calculator , paper , pencil
or a computer. It (calculations) is solely done by human
mind using mental power or performing
mathematical calculations mentally. According to
scientific studies and research mental abilities in
children must be developed by the age of 12.

objectives of mental arithmetic education?

What are the mental
arithmetic methods ?
Mental arithmetic is a skill that can be cultivated initially by adopting the pen or bead. In the pen method we use pen and paper to perform the calculation. In the bead method we use an imaginary abacus in our minds to calculate and arrive at the answer. UCMAS adopts the later method, using an abacus. We can use the bead method to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. The different methods of calculation can be divided into :

Dictation
This is also called "Mental arithmetic calculation through listening’ to the sum/problem ". Someone will read aloud the numbers and the listener will perform the calculation.

Observation
The person will use the numbers that he sees and imagines the numbers to be the beads on an abacus. He will use this imaginary abacus to perform the calculation.
·
Silent Dication
The person will dictate the number to himself silently and use an imaginary abacus to perform the calculation. |

Mental arithmetic skill is an
inborn talent.
Some people think
that only intelligent people can master mental arithmetic. In actual fact, as
long as a person has learnt how to manipulate the beads in an abacus, it will
be easy for him to master mental arithmetic. Therefore, as long as someone
practices the lessons diligently, he/she can master this skill.

only a short time to master mental arithmetic.
